WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Wednesday, March 23rd at 11:30 am, Councilmember Mary M. Cheh (D – Ward 3) will host an autonomous delivery robot demonstration outside of the Wilson Building. Developed by Starship Technologies, whose founders were also the chief technical architects behind Skype, the delivery robots are designed to transport parcels along the sidewalk and cut consumer costs of package delivery. Termed Sustainable Delivery Devices (SSD), the self-driving robots are electrically-powered and emit zero CO2.
Councilmember Cheh will introduce legislation to legalize ground-based autonomous delivery services and will instruct the SSD to drive into the Wilson Building to file the legislation with the Council of the District of Columbia Secretary. With two pilot programs already operational in Europe, the District of Columbia may become the first jurisdiction in the country to host a fleet of delivery robots.
