Councilmember Cheh urges the District to join the United States Climate Alliance
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, June 2nd, Councilmember Cheh (D-Ward 3), in her position as Chairperson of the Committee on Transportation and the Environment, will call upon Mayor Bowser to seek membership in the newly announced United States Climate Alliance. The United States Climate Alliance currently comprises the states of California, New York, and Washington and was formed in response to President Trump’s announcement that the United States will withdraw from the 2015 Paris Agreement.
Councilmember Cheh will formally call upon the Mayor to join nation-wide alliance efforts and pledge the District’s commitment to the 2015 Paris Agreement through a Sense of the Council Resolution to be introduced at the Tuesday, June 6th Legislative Meeting.
“The District has always been on the forefront of environmental initiatives and has set some of the most ambitious renewable energy goals in the country. We know that fighting climate change produces jobs, improves the economy, and protects the environment. As nation-wide alliances continue to form and evolve, the District’s involvement and early leadership will send the strong message that the nation’s Capital is not complicit with President Trump’s shortsighted, anti-science climate agenda. And, while we may represent a small geographic area, our experience and successes may serve to guide other states looking to adhere to the terms of the Paris Agreement,” said Councilmember Cheh.
