Cheh request DPR Director to justify the agency’s $54,000 trip to Houston conference

Cheh wants a five year history of the agency’s travel expenses.

Washington, D.C. – Attached is a letter Councilmember Mary Cheh (D-Ward 3) sent last week to Sharia Shanklin, Interim Director of the District’s Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) requesting that the agency provide her with a detailed explanation for its trip to a national parks and recreation conference in Houston, TX. The trip cost $54,000 and occurred in the midst of the October 2013 government shutdown. Thirty employees attended the conference for five days, despite the fact that conference activities only took place over the course of three days. Additionally, employees were able to claim the maximum per diem amount on days when the conference provided meals to their attendees. In her letter, Cheh also called on DPR to provide her with information outlining all travel, conference fees, and related expenses incurred by DPR employees over the past five years.
