Although I usually use this space to update you on the various things going on in the Council, I wanted to take the liberty today to acknowledge the decades of incredible service from Carla Cohen and Barbara Meade, the owners of Politics and Prose.
As you know, Carla and Barbara are planning to sell Politics and Prose, after 26 years of selling books and serving as an anchor for the community. I can think of few other places in Washington that are dearer to my heart, and like so many others, I will miss the wonderful presence that both bring to the store. I am relieved, though, by the report that they will find an owner who will continue their legacy.
Open Government
This week was an exciting week for transparency in the District of Columbia, as I held a hearing on the Open Government Act of 2010. The hearing was very informative, with excellent testimony from witnesses about the need for reform in the areas of the District’s Freedom of Information laws and in budget and spending transparency.
In the Community
Last week, I met with constituents at block parties throughout the Ward and at Glover Park day. This Sunday, June 13th, I will be bagging groceries at the Chevy Chase Safeway (5545 Connecticut Ave NW) to raise money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Afterward, I will be holding my regular Chat with Cheh at the Chevy Chase Starbucks (5500 Connecticut Ave NW) at 1:00 pm. I hope to see you there!
Week Ahead
I also hope you will be able to attend the Rock Creek West II Livability Study public meeting next Wednesday, June 16th, 6:30 pm, at the Methodist Home of DC (4901 Connecticut Avenue NW). This important project is designed to “evaluate the street network from a system perspective, defining the context and character of individual streets and determining what function each street serves in the greater network.” Please come out and participate!
